Overview

Hyalex Orthopaedics is a medical device company advancing products that use HYALEX™ materials technology, a polymer intended to mimic cartilage. The synthetic HYALEX material is designed to maintain low friction and low wear under the high loads encountered in human joints, differentiating it from other polymers. Its products are in the development stage and have not been approved for use in humans by any regulatory agency. The company is led by President and CEO Mira Sahney and is based in Lexington, MA. An expansion of its Series A brings total Series A funding to $33MM to support development of its platform. The new capital is intended to advance its product development and platform work toward regulatory milestones. Hyalex Orthopaedics develops synthetic biomaterials based on HYALEX™ technology, a polymer engineered to mimic the structure and function of hyaline cartilage. The HYALEX material is licensed from Stanford University and is intended for use in articulating joints such as the hip, knee, shoulder and ankle. The company is advancing new products that feature this synthetic cartilage-mimicking polymer. Leadership includes co-founder and chief technology officer Lampros Kourtis, Ph.D., and newly appointed president and CEO Mira Sahney. Sahney brings over 20 years of global corporate experience, including senior roles at Smith & Nephew where she led growth and the sale of the gynecology division to Medtronic for $350 million and the turnaround of the ENT division. Financially, the company completed a $16m Series A in May 2017 led by Canaan Partners.
