Hydra is developing an open-source cloud data warehouse by transforming Postgres into a scalable analytics engine. The founders decouple Postgres’ query layer, compute, and storage and add columnar storage and vectorized execution to support analytics at scale. The product is offered as downloadable open source software and as a paid managed service where Hydra handles the underlying complexity. The company is a Y Combinator winter 2022 alum and is currently a team of four. Hydra has paying customers in an early access program and is already generating revenue. The founders aim for the product to serve as a less expensive, open alternative to incumbents like Snowflake.
