Overview
Iceni Pharmaceuticals launched to develop repurposed and reformulated cancer therapies, using established drugs in new combinations to reduce cost and risk and accelerate patient access. Its lead product, Cilcane® (cilengitide), is being repurposed as a first-in-class treatment for multiple myeloma and is reported to have an excellent safety profile and a novel mechanism of action. Preclinical studies conducted by Iceni indicate Cilcane® is effective as a combination therapy with proteasome inhibitors such as bortezomib, and the company believes the approach may extend to breast and other cancers. Iceni holds a broad intellectual property portfolio covering formulation and methods of use for Cilcane® and has appointed a scientific advisory board including former Merck Serono executives and leading myeloma researchers. Cilengitide was previously involved in over 30 clinical trials, including extensive Phase III testing at Merck Serono, though monotherapy development in glioblastoma was terminated in 2013. The company plans a Phase II safety/efficacy trial of Cilcane® starting in 2017 for relapsed refractory patients who have received prior proteasome inhibitor therapy.
