Overview
Idx’s first product, IDx-DR, is an AI diagnostic system that analyzes images of the retina to detect diabetic retinopathy and enables non–eye-care clinicians to screen patients without specialist interpretation. The company received FDA clearance for IDx-DR in April, and the system was put into clinical use at University of Iowa Health Care in June. Idx emphasizes an autonomous, biomarker-based approach rather than a black box model, which the company says has allowed real-world execution. This week Idx announced a $33 million tranche of funding led by 8VC, with participation from Optum Ventures, Alpha Edison and Heritage Provider Network, taking total funding past $54 million. The company expects the investment to accelerate adoption of IDx-DR for the roughly 30 million Americans who need diabetic retinopathy screening annually. Idx is also developing additional AI diagnostic systems targeting glaucoma, stroke risk, Alzheimer’s, macular degeneration and cardiovascular disease.
