If You Can Company, founded by EA founder Trip Hawkins, develops gameplay to teach social and emotional learning (SEL) skills. Its product, “IF…”, is a chapter-based adventure game set in the imaginary town of Greenberry in which children aged 7–11 undertake a hero’s journey to learn managing emotions, perseverance, decision-making, empathy and compassion. The game blends storytelling and gameplay mechanics with SEL curriculum informed by academic research, State of Illinois standards and school programs such as The Nueva School. Parents can track their child’s accomplishments and development within the app. The game is currently available only on iPad, with plans to expand to other mobile platforms. The company has raised a total of $9.3M to date and Greylock partner David Sze has joined the board.
