Ignitia provides hyper-local tropical weather forecasts delivered by SMS to farmers in West Africa. The company operates in Ghana, Mali and Nigeria and serves over 450,000 active subscribers. Its forecasts claim 84% accuracy for areas as small as 3 km² and are produced by an algorithm that analyzes satellite data from public and private sources. Ignitia partners with major regional telcos to pinpoint customers' locations and personalize predictions. Founder and CEO Liisa Smits, a physicist with climate-change and satellite-imagery research experience, says the algorithm is the main innovation. The forecasts are intended to help farmers make better-informed decisions and improve farming practices. Ignitia plans to use the capital to scale in Nigeria and is exploring a partnership to bundle forecasts with a seed company.
