Overview
Immertec, founded in 2017, builds the Medoptic real-time virtual reality platform to provide immersive medical training for clinicians. Using VR headsets, trainees can enter virtual endoscopy operating rooms and communicate with others. The company received a $17,500 grant to run a VR training pilot at the University of Michigan Medical School, delivering an orthopedic surgery experience for graduate students. In 2023 Immertec received $1.6M in research funding and in February 2024 it completed a $4M financing. The firm currently partners with six of the world’s top ten medical-device manufacturers. Leadership says the Michigan pilot is its first collaboration with students after working with medical-device customers, and the company plans to expand its customer base and hire new employees. Immertec Tech develops a real-time, immersive VR platform that enables surgeons to train remotely and removes physical barriers to adopting medical devices and procedures. The company is producing 100 units of its VR platform and plans to deploy them across the country. It reopened its Series A to raise additional capital and has a runway to scale operations and hiring. Proceeds will be used to expand into new locations and hire senior operations leadership, including a chief operating officer and director-level roles. The team has grown to 23 employees and is expected to approach 50 by year-end. Immertec is preparing to raise a Series B next year. Founded in 2017 by Erik Maltais and Jon Clagg, Immertec applies virtual reality to medical and surgical training. Its core product, Medoptic, leverages patented 3D live‑streaming technology to broadcast fully immersive VR video and overlays for training applications. A combined hardware and software setup—including VR headsets and cameras—enables remote viewers to access and interact with operating‑room procedures in real time. Use cases include virtual medical device training, collaborations on surgical procedures, question‑and‑answer sessions, and consults between physicians. A 2019 pilot with Johnson & Johnson put Medoptic in the hands of 3,000 doctors, demonstrating early user adoption. The company recently received an investment from Par, Inc.
