Overview

Independa develops integrated community engagement and remote care technologies delivered through the television, offering the Independa TV with embedded engagement services. The platform enables picture sharing, messaging, video chat and calendar reminders on the viewer’s TV without computers, tablets, passwords or virus scans. Independa ships LG TVs with Independa embedded for consumer purchase and supplies added enterprise capabilities to senior living communities and care organizations. The company has received CES recognition, including a 2015 CES Innovation Award and a #1 Technology in Senior Care mention at CES 2014. The recent $6 million Series B will fund market expansion, new product development and advancement of its remote engagement solutions, bringing total funding to more than $10 million. Independa builds Angela, a tablet-based application (also available on select LG TVs) that helps seniors manage their lives and care while aging in place. Angela offers one-touch shortcuts to video chats, email, the Internet, Facebook, games and puzzles, and an interface with large fonts, higher contrast and bright colors for users with poor eyesight. The software can remind users to take medications, keep medical and personal appointments, and remember birthdays and anniversaries. Independa has partnered with LG Electronics USA to preload Angela on some internet-connected TVs used in senior care facilities. The company is San Diego-based and has said it aims to make its solutions more broadly available. Financially, Independa previously raised about $5 million in its first round (closed early 2013) and has recently completed a roughly $2.8 million second round per an SEC filing. Independa is a San Diego-based health care software company. It has developed a cloud-based service that helps families remotely keep tabs on older relatives. The company has been raising capital and closed $1.85 million of a $2.25 million Series B financing. That portion of the round was led by San Diego-based life sciences venture capital firm City Hill Ventures. City Hill also provided most of Independa’s $5 million Series A financing earlier this year. Independa provides organizations and individuals with a suite of technology-enabled independent-living solutions to help the elderly remain independent more comfortably. Its offerings include comprehensive social engagement benefits, medication and appointment reminders, support for activities of daily living, and wireless health, remote monitoring and safety solutions. The company has a strategic relationship with LG to offer its Angela™ social-engagement platform embedded on LG’s Pro:Centric-enabled commercial televisions. Led by CEO Kian Saneii and based in San Diego, CA, Independa closed a $5m Series A financing that also included conversion of a $2.35m convertible note. Investors in the round included existing investor City Hill Ventures, strategic partner LG Electronics USA, and other investors. The company intends to use the funds to grow its customer base by expanding its network of distributors and channel partners and to increase investments in R&D, sales, and marketing.
