Overview

Pressplane is a Seattle startup that builds Zapd, a mobile publishing platform enabling people to create good-looking, customized websites directly from their iPhones. Zapd launched in March and has been downloaded 320,000 times with very little marketing. The company plans to use the new funding to add features such as live realtime themes, interactive widgets, and hooks into social networks. CEO Kelly Smith framed the effort as a rethink of how websites are made and consumed. Pressplane also operates Inkd, a custom printing, logo, and design service. PressPlane is a Seattle startup emerging from the Curious Office incubator. Curious Office describes it as a buy-and-sell content marketplace focused on designers and creative content serving businesses. An update to the original report says PressPlane is creating a way for small businesses to produce professional marketing materials—brochures, one-pagers, etc.—by selecting pre-made designs and adding their information. The company is inviting sign-ups for an upcoming beta. PressPlane announced a $1.7 million round of financing led by Second Avenue Partners. Named investors include Mika Salmi, Rich Barton, Erik Blachford, Andy Liu, Alex Algard, Geoff Entress (Madrona), Andy Sack, Adrian Hanauer, John Cunningham and Dough Rowan. The incubator notes the team is applying lessons from its prior Imagekind business while not competing with Imagekind’s new owner, CafePress.
