Instant is a San Francisco–based startup building a modern, open-source re-imagining of pre-acquisition Firebase that runs on a multi-tenant AWS Aurora Postgres architecture. The service provides front-end developers using React, React Native or vanilla JavaScript with a real-time database that supports offline mode, optimistic updates, authentication, permissions, shared cursors, presence and more. By consolidating customers into one large Postgres instance, Instant claims lower cost and faster provisioning than competitors that spin up separate databases for every project. The founders, former roommates Joe Averbukh and Stepan Parunashvili, previously worked at Wit.ai, Facebook and Airbnb, experiences that shaped their focus on rapid product iteration. The project has been open-sourced to encourage community adoption and contributions. Instant envisions expanding its offering to enterprise customers by provisioning dedicated databases when required.
