Intellia Therapeutics is building a fully integrated, product‑driven biotechnology company focused on developing proprietary human therapeutics using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. The company is pursuing both in vivo and ex vivo applications with the goal of creating potentially curative medicines for unmet medical needs. Intellia says it will use proceeds from its recent financing to accelerate pipeline development, expand its gene‑editing and delivery platforms, and strengthen its intellectual property portfolio. Intellia Therapeutics was formed to develop therapeutic products using CRISPR-Cas9 technology and holds exclusive access to a comprehensive intellectual property portfolio for therapeutic applications. The company’s near-term focus is on ex vivo applications—removing, correcting and returning cells—for indications including blood disorders, therapeutic protein production and cancer (including CAR-T and checkpoint inhibitor regulation). Intellia is also pursuing longer-term in vivo programs intended to correct genes within specific cells, targeting ophthalmic, CNS, muscle, liver, anti-infective and other disease states. Management is led by CEO and co-founder Nessan Bermingham, Ph.D., alongside a team including CSO Thomas Barnes, Ph.D., CMO John Leonard, M.D., CTO David Morrissey, Ph.D., and General Counsel José Rivera. The company says it is advancing a broad pipeline toward clinical development and progressing toward its first IND filing. Financially, Intellia closed a $15 million Series A in 2014 to fund its therapeutic development.
