ISI Technology commercialized the Heatworks Model1, a fully electronic water heater that heats water directly using the electrical resistance of water to deliver near-instant hot water. The company launched the Model1 in 2014 and has sold several thousand units via Kickstarter, its website and Lowe’s, which is its primary retail partner. Founder Jerry Callahan, who previously founded Blue Rhino, leads the company’s product and commercialization efforts. In response to new U.S. DOE NAECA3 efficiency standards, ISI developed the Model1x to connect to the 50-gallon tank standard and produce 50–100% more hot water depending on ambient temperature. Both Model1 and Model1x are connected products and part of the “Works With Nest” ecosystem. ISI plans to grow distribution, expand into smaller, cheaper, lighter and more reliable water-heating devices, and is exploring partnerships and licensing to integrate Heatworks technology into washing machines, dishwashers and other household appliances.
