itsme is a Brussels-based secure mobile app offering identification, authentication, confirmation and digital signing using a 5-digit secret code (or biometric replacement). Founded in 2017, the service complies with PSD2 authentication requirements and enables users to approve transactions, log in and sign documents securely. The app is widely used in Belgium: it reports 3.5 million users, about 20% of the active population, and roughly 45% of adults have created an itsme account; an average of 3,500 accounts are added every day. itsme handles nearly 5 million transactions per month and more than 18.5 million authentications monthly across roughly 150 partners. The app was adopted as the login for Belgium's CovidSafe.be “corona passport,” with over 1 million registrations via itsme. itsme is owned by a consortium of seven private companies (Belfius, BNP Paribas Fortis, ING Belgium, KBC Bank, Orange Belgium, Proximus and Telenet) and says it will invest to pursue European ambitions, including recent steps into the Netherlands.
