iWin is a Ticino-based proptech startup developing a patent-pending smart photovoltaic Venetian blind sealed inside an insulating glass unit that produces renewable energy while providing light and solar control. Its single-component device combines renewable energy production, solar and light management, and a high-quality window, and is maintenance-free with protection against dirt, dust, and weather. The company targets real estate developers, building owners, and public authorities and is addressing a CHF 9 billion opportunity to make the global real estate market more sustainable. iWin filed its first international patent in 2018 and had its first working prototype measured and validated at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland. In September the team installed a first mock-up with three integrated windows at the Valuxlab house in Milano. The newly obtained CHF 150,000 Venture Kick funding will enable iWin to finalize a minimum viable product and enter the market. iWin has developed and patented an innovative window solution that integrates thin, flexible film photovoltaic cells into window blinds without compromising design or operation. The product protects buildings from overheating in summer, reduces cooling energy and energy bills, and produces renewable electricity. iWin’s solution is integrated inside double-glazing units for durability and is claimed to repay the initial cost in less than 10 years, faster than rival blind solutions. The team has moved beyond proof of concept, deposited a first international patent and validated a working prototype through simulation analysis and measurements. With an industrial partner they validated market numbers and manufacturing feasibility together with a CIGS photovoltaic manufacturer. Venture Kick funds will be used to finance activities related to implementing the business plan, including meetings, market analysis, competitor scouting, surveys and participation in exhibitions.
