Overview
Jolt is a spin-out from the Catalan Institute for Chemical Research founded by Leon Rizzi, Alberto Bucci, Arturo Vilavella, and Julio Lloret-Fillol. The company’s core product is a patented catalytic coating for electrodes intended to reduce material use, CO2 emissions, and energy consumption in electrode production. Jolt says its technology targets a reduction in electrode contribution to electrolyser production cost from current averages (up to 22% for alkaline/AEM and 26% for PEM) to about 8% initially and below 5% subsequently. The start-up has raised a €6 million Series A to fund commercialisation and build its first electrode production plant in Barcelona. Funds will also support a state-of-the-art laboratory, with plant operations scheduled to commence in early 2024. The team positions electrode advancement as a critical enabler for scaling green hydrogen through cheaper, more efficient electrolysis.
