Journal provides a search platform that indexes and searches across email, Slack, Google Docs and other web services to help individuals find information spread across apps. The company uses machine learning and NLP to create a "second brain" for users and has launched a beta community of users. Today it is publicly launching a Mac app, web app and Chrome extension. Journal emphasizes privacy and security: data is encrypted in transit and at rest, uses zero-knowledge encryption, and encrypts content with the Fernet symmetric method (AES-128 in CBC mode + HMAC-SHA-256) while its conceptual index is protected with Amazon KMS (AES-256 in GCM mode). The secret key combines a hash from the OAuth access key for an integrated account and a Journal secret key, which the company says prevents Journal employees from decrypting user data. The team acknowledges user concerns about granting view permissions to apps and the general trust implications of holding sensitive data. On monetization, advertising is not part of current plans and the company says the likely route is selling to companies that pay for teams to use the product.
