K-Zen Beverages is a months-old, five-person startup building cannabis-infused shot beverages in lemon chamomile, pink lemonade and wild berry flavors. The company is developing three drinks: one that features THC exclusively and two that blend CBD and THC. K-Zen has not yet rolled out a product but is targeting a summer launch, selling first in California dispensaries and directly via its site. Co-founder and co-CEO Judy Yee, a packaged-goods and wellness veteran, and branding expert Soon Yu lead the company and consumer positioning. K-Zen is targeting busy, 'cannacurious' consumers and is considering educational tools (for example, pictograms) to help customers understand onset and effects. The startup is positioning itself in a changing regulatory environment where CBD has grown since hemp legalization and more states have legalized medical or recreational marijuana.
