Overview
Kairos builds facial-recognition and authentication tools for businesses and has long engaged with issues of algorithmic bias. Its product focus includes age and identity verification, and the company plans to pursue opportunities in online dating and online gambling verticals. Through an investment and partnership with Domus Semo Sancus (DSS), Kairos will also create identity-verification solutions for banks. The company maintains an R&D team in Singapore. Financially, Kairos had only enough cash to get through Q1 as of November and has now raised $4 million, bringing total funding to $17 million. The business is operating amid a leadership transition and ongoing litigation following the ouster of founder Brian Brackeen; Melissa Doval is now permanent CEO. Kairos builds TimeClock, a facial-recognition app that identifies hourly employees when they clock in to prevent "buddy punching." TimeClock launched in beta on the day of the article and is aimed at small businesses that need to monitor payroll losses. The company had lined up 51 businesses to participate in the beta, spanning small stores, supermarkets, hospitals, and consulting firms, and was in talks with Lowe’s. Kairos said the $500,000 seed funding from angel backers will be used to launch the product and hire additional staff. At the time of the article it had 19 staff and maintained headquarters in Miami with a satellite office in London. Kairos emerged from the Spring 2012 class of the NewMe Accelerator.
