Kandu is an iPad app that teaches kids the structure of programming by letting them build games and animated pictures without writing traditional code. The interface uses left and right toolbars where children add characters, objects and backgrounds, then apply behaviors like gravity and bouncy collisions. Users can publish creations to a main feed and other kids can play or “Remix” those projects to add their own changes. The company plans revenue streams including a marketplace where kids can sell designs and sponsored premium character/object packs from brands, though it is not prioritizing monetization yet. At the time of the article the app was in private beta with a planned full launch later in the year and a limited access code offered to select readers. Kandu was launched as a betaworks-backed venture by founders David Bennahum and Gerry Laybourne and has secured early funding to support product development and growth.
