Kanichi Research Services is a UK developer of ultra-sensitive electrochemical sensors for the point-of-care healthcare market. The company plans to develop a handheld device for assessing chemicals in breath and is relocating to the Biomedical Cluster at Liverpool Science Park. It received a £285K follow-on investment from The North West Fund for Biomedical, managed by SPARK Impact. That investor has now injected a total of £460K into the company across its support. Kanichi will use the funding to carry out an 18-month technical evaluation of its technology at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester. The round represents the company's third funding. The company also offers electrochemical and nanomaterial technology to support trace component detection, conductive functionalised inks, RFID devices, fuel cells and printed thin-film batteries. Founded in 2008 by Professor David Walton and based in Manchester, Kanichi focuses on bespoke components for advanced sensor systems. The company has raised £50K from the North West Fund for Biomedical. It intends to use the funds to grow its team—particularly the commercial unit—to engage further with customers and licensees and to prosecute existing patents and file new ones.
