Overview
Katango is a startup that automatically sorts a user's Facebook friends into lists by analyzing interactions, social graph closeness, and stated geographies. It launched an iPhone app that connects via Facebook Connect to generate friend lists and lets users send messages or photos to groups via email, Facebook message, or push notification. The app also gathers contact information from the phone address book and Facebook to determine the best delivery channel for each contact. Katango plans to let other services and apps tap its auto-grouping algorithms and intends to expand to Android and a web-based version. The company was founded about a year prior to the article and has raised $2 million led by Kleiner Perkins S Fund, with Bing Gordon joining the board. The founding team includes cofounder and chairman Yoav Shoham (Stanford CS professor) and Stanford PhD cofounders Michael Munie and Thuc Vu; Yee Lee is VP of Product.
