Kazaana, formerly PixyKids, is a Menlo Park–based social platform aimed at children ages 6 to 12 and their families. The product combines play and social features so kids can play games, text, video chat, send video messages, share photos, videos and art, and personalize 3D avatars. Planned features include decorating personal "rooms," visiting friends' rooms, gamification elements, creative apps and mobile apps. The site is designed from the child's point of view while giving parents controls such as approving friend requests, viewing shared content, and archiving memories. Kazaana is TRUSTe certified and COPPA-compliant and recently added children's privacy expert Shai Samet to its advisory board. The company rebranded from PixyKids as it moved from private beta (started in spring) into open beta. While currently free, the team plans to monetize via subscriptions, virtual goods, sponsorships and undisclosed patent-pending strategies.
