Overview
Kinetica offers an in-memory database platform that leverages Nvidia GPUs on commodity hardware (and cloud GPU instances) to accelerate real-time analysis and visualization. The technology originated from a 2009 consulting project for U.S. intelligence agencies and was built to handle high-velocity, external data streams. CEO Amit Vij claims the platform can be roughly 100x faster than traditional databases while using about one-tenth of the hardware costs. Kinetica partners with hardware vendors such as IBM, HP and Dell and can also run on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud Platform. Initial customers include GlaxoSmithKline, PG&E and the U.S. Postal Service. The company positions itself against legacy database vendors like Oracle and SAP HANA by emphasizing GPU-based performance and lower cost. Kinetica provides a distributed, in-memory database accelerated by GPUs that ingests, explores, analyzes and visualizes streaming data in milliseconds. The product was built from the ground up (formerly GPUdb) for real-time intelligence and was originally deployed for the US Army Intelligence and Security Command. Kinetica claims 100x faster performance using 1/10 of the hardware of traditional databases and cites deployments with federal and commercial customers, including the United States Postal Service. The company has partnerships with NVIDIA for accelerated hardware and certifications on IBM, HP, Dell and Cisco servers. Recent hires from Cloudera, Hortonworks, MapR and Platfora expand operations, sales, marketing, engineering and services to support worldwide growth. Kinetica moved its headquarters to San Francisco while maintaining offices in Arlington, VA, and plans to use new funding to drive product development, marketing and sales expansion into commercial markets.
