Overview
Kinsa is a San Francisco-based developer of smart thermometers and related products. It offers a suite of smart products and services, including smartphone-connected thermometers that record illness details and offer guidance on next steps. The company also shows common illnesses circulating within communities and is advancing a real-time health map to help track and stop the spread of illness. Kinsa’s products are sold online and in more than 7,000 North American retail stores, including Target, Babies R Us, buybuyBaby and CVS. In August 2017 the company raised $17m in financing, bringing total financing to $28.6m. It intends to use the new capital to develop additional smart products and services. Kinsa builds an FDA‑approved, app‑enabled smart thermometer that plugs into a smartphone headphone jack and displays child‑friendly animations while recording temperature readings in about 10 seconds. The thermometer syncs with an app to keep dated records of fevers, prescriptions, and symptoms, and includes social features to help parents differentiate between common illnesses. Kinsa recently launched Fluency, a program to track illness spread in schools and small communities by distributing free thermometer kits to selected schools. The device retails for $29.99, and the company is exploring using its product as a communications layer for telemedicine and prescription‑delivery partners. Kinsa plans to use new funding to grow the team by hiring engineers, marketers, and operations staff to scale product and supply‑chain efforts. The company is led by founder and CEO Inder Singh. Kinsa received FDA 510(k) clearance for its smartphone-connected Smart Thermometer, which plugs into a phone’s headphone jack and uses the display and phone processing to deliver precise readings. The device is designed for parents and children and uses animated visuals to calm and engage kids during measurements, while the app lets users create family profiles and track fever, symptoms and illness history. Kinsa intends to add additional software features and use the device as a communication channel with sick users. The company’s stated long-term goal is to create a “health weather,” a real-time map of circulating illnesses by combining its device data with other sources. Kinsa is conducting a private beta in early January, is taking pre-orders for March–April delivery, and is initially selling the thermometer for $14.99. Financially, the NYC-based startup has raised $2.0 million in seed funding and an additional $52,000 on Indiegogo.
