Kite is an AI Copilot for Python programmers that integrates as a plugin into popular coding environments to suggest relevant code snippets as developers type. Its flagship feature, "Line-of-Code Completions," can complete entire function calls with a single keystroke using deep learning models that learn semantic representations of source code. Kite has also released a locally running ML plugin (Kite Local) so its engine runs on a developer's machine, enabling offline use, lower latency, and avoiding uploading code to the cloud. The product is available for Atom, PyCharm, and VS Code and is used by more than 30,000 Python developers worldwide. Financially, Kite secured a $17 million Series A and plans to use the funding to expand its R&D team and build additional developer productivity features. Board and investor moves include Trinity Ventures partner Dan Scholnick joining the board and prior seed backing from angel investors. Kite builds an AI-powered coding assistant that integrates with IDEs and text editors to provide intelligent code completions and relevant code snippets. It connects editors to web sources such as GitHub and language manuals, using type inference and machine learning trained on GitHub code to rank and surface popular usage examples rather than alphabetical suggestions. In its current form Kite runs on OS X, supports Python only, and plugs into editors including Atom, Vim and Sublime Text; support for Windows, Linux and additional languages is planned for later this summer. The product also monitors terminal input, offers community discussion features, and exposes a plug-in API with open-sourced plug-ins to enable broader integration. Financially, the company has raised $4 million from a group of angel investors including Drew Houston, Max Levchin, Joe Lonsdale and Emmett Shear. Kite says it is still determining its business model and expects to offer paid tools for teams while keeping the basic product free. CEO Adam Smith previously founded Xobni, which was sold to Yahoo.
