KLD Energy Technologies

1611 Headway Circle Building 3, Austin, Texas, 78754, United States

Overview

KLD Energy Technologies, based in Austin, Texas and incorporated in August 2008, develops an integrated high-frequency electric motor platform that combines the motor, battery pack and motor controller. Its first commercial application targets electric scooters and motorcycles, and the system operates at much higher frequencies than traditional iron-core motors, enabling direct drive, regenerative capture of kinetic energy, higher efficiency, and scalable power and speed. KLD also highlights a unique battery laminate designed to extend battery life and reduce service costs. The company has commercial agreements with Eclimo Sdn Bhd and Vmoto Ltd., and a contract-manufacturing agreement with Zhejiang Qianjiang Motorcycle Co. Ltd., which plans to incorporate the system in its products. KLD recently completed a fully subscribed $10 million convertible debt offering and has raised nearly $26 million in capital since incorporation, about half of that in the past year. The company says it will use the proceeds for multi-industry development of its motor system, research and introduction of new products, and global expansion, and it is in advanced discussions with institutional investors about at least $20 million of additional investment. KLD Energy Technologies develops a transmissionless electric drive system that pairs a motor with an advanced electric motor controller and modular battery packs. The system is designed to improve vehicle performance while substantially decreasing environmental impact. KLD plans to accelerate commercialization of its high-performance electric drive system and execute an expansion strategy to introduce products into new markets. The company was selected by the State of Texas to receive $2.8M from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund to support those efforts. KLD has signed collaboration agreements with Australia-based Vmoto Limited to research and test implementation, Malaysia-based EcLimo to receive the drive system, and with multiple Chinese companies to incorporate the system into their vehicles. The funding is intended to help move the product toward broader market adoption. KLD Energy Technologies develops high-performance electric drive systems, with its initial product a transmissionless drive designed to improve vehicle performance while substantially reducing environmental impact. The company is based in Austin, Texas and has begun commercial activity through partnerships in Asia. KLD signed an agreement to provide its drive system to EcLimo, a Malaysia-based vehicle manufacturer, and entered a joint venture to produce electric drivetrains with Vietnam-based Tien Loc Co. Ltd. It is also collaborating with major Chinese companies to incorporate the drive system into their vehicles. KLD said it will use new capital to accelerate commercialization, execute its expansion strategy, and introduce its products to new markets.
