Overview
Kona Medical’s core product is the Surround Sound® Renal Denervation System, which uses external ultrasound to treat nerves to and from the kidney. Clinical studies have shown renal denervation can produce significant and lasting blood-pressure reductions in drug-resistant hypertension patients. Kona positions its non-invasive approach as a way to increase patient access to renal denervation and lower healthcare costs. The company is based in Bellevue, Washington, and Menlo Park, California. Kona recently closed a $10 million Series D financing to support work in the China market and to address clinical, regulatory, and intellectual-property matters there. Its technology remains investigational and is not yet for sale or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Kona Medical is developing the Kona Surround SoundTM system, which uses externally delivered ultrasound to treat the renal nerves involved in blood-pressure regulation. Unlike catheter-based approaches that deliver energy through the renal artery wall, Kona’s technology treats the nerves from outside the patient. The company reported initial results from its WAVE I clinical study at the TCT conference. Kona says the fully non-invasive system may expand access to renal denervation and offer a more patient-friendly alternative for the tens of millions who suffer from drug-resistant hypertension. The company has 25 employees and is based in Bellevue, Washington, and Menlo Park, California. Its technology is investigational and not yet approved for sale by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
