Overview
Krutrim develops large language models and specialized models for Indian languages and has open-sourced several systems for images, speech translation and text search. It released Krutrim-2, a 12-billion-parameter model that the lab says scores 0.95 on sentiment analysis (vs. 0.70 for competing models), achieves an 80% success rate in code generation, 0.98 in grammar correction and 0.91 in multi-turn conversations. The lab built BharatBench to evaluate proficiency in Indian languages and uses a 128,000-token context window to handle longer texts and complex conversations. Krutrim plans to deploy what it says will be India’s largest supercomputer in partnership with Nvidia, with the initial deployment scheduled for March and expansion planned through the year. Its cloud arm began offering DeepSeek on Indian servers, and the company previously launched Krutrim-1, a 7-billion-parameter system in January. Founder Bhavish Aggarwal is financing a $230M investment through his family office and the lab aims to attract $1.15B in investment by next year. Krutrim, founded last year by Bhavish Aggarwal (founder of Ola), is building a large language model trained on local Indian languages as well as English. The company plans to launch a voice-enabled conversational AI assistant that understands and speaks multiple Indian languages and will make a beta chatbot available to consumers next month. It plans to follow the consumer beta with APIs for developers and enterprises. Krutrim also says it intends to develop in-house capability to manufacture chips optimized for AI compute and will explore designing and developing chips. The startup said its recent funding values it at $1 billion, making it, the company claims, the fastest to reach unicorn status in India and the country's first AI unicorn. Aggarwal's prior companies include Ola and Ola Electric; the article notes Ola Electric has filed paperwork for a $662 million IPO and Ola is eyeing profitability. Krutrim SI Designs was founded in April of this year and is led by co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal alongside Tenneti Venugopala Krishnamurthy. The company is building silicon chips, a cloud infrastructure to deliver solutions to clients, and AI models, and will support Ola Electric’s operations. Financially, the company has approved issuance of debentures to raise Rs 197 crore (roughly $24 million) via a debt transaction. The funds were issued as Series A and Series B debentures with a face value of Rs 10 each, and the debentures are structured to be convertible into equity in a future equity raise. Krutrim has been in discussions to raise a larger $50–100 million round this year, with possible participation from Matrix Partners and Ola’s existing investors. The company’s near-term activity is framed by India’s broader push into chips and cloud AI infrastructure.
