Krypt.co launched with a free app called Kryptonite that moves private SSH key use to users' smartphones, notifying the phone to approve or reject sign-in attempts. The product pairs a developer's phone with their computer so keys are not stored on laptops where apps lack sandboxing. The team—cofounded by former MIT students Alex Grinman and Kevin King with professor David Gifford—says users can revoke or cut off key access if a phone is lost or stolen. The company intends the free offering to build relationships in the developer community and layer paid services on top over time. Planned features include a team administrator dashboard to set device policies and view developers' public keys. Longer-term use cases the founders mention include code signing to prevent fraudulent commits and simplified encrypted email for broader users.
