Kuapay builds a mobile wallet app that stores bank cards and store/rewards cards and enables payments via QR codes or one-dimensional barcodes. The app is available for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry, with Windows Phone support planned, and it integrates with POS systems including NCR, Micros and Aloha. Kuapay adds gamified social features and merchant loyalty tools—coupons, punchcard programs and badges that can convert to store credit and be shared—while its scan process does not transmit full credit card data. The 35-person company is based in Santa Monica and has offices in Chile and Spain, with technical trials in Panama, Colombia and the U.K. and Hong Kong planned. Its initial U.S. footprint includes 40 local merchants and a deal to pilot the service at 100 southern California KFC locations. With the new funding, Kuapay plans to open offices in New York, Madrid and Hong Kong and move from technical to commercial trials targeting markets including Brazil, Canada and eventually China. Financially, the company has just closed a $4 million round from a single private investor and had previously raised $2.5 million from private investors and friends and family.
