Kuddle is a mobile app that offers a restricted, Instagram-like photo-sharing experience designed specifically for young children under parental supervision. The app requires a parent email approval before a child’s photos are visible, notifies parents whenever a child posts or adds a friend, prevents comments, and does not geo-tag images so a child’s location is not revealed. Photos appear only in approved friends’ feeds and children can caption or draw on images while friends can only like them. Kuddle is COPPA-compliant, is free for children, and the company says it will not use in-app purchases or market to children. The startup was founded in March by a Norway-based team of developers and designers, led by co-founder and CEO Ole Vidar Hestaas, with Kathryn Moore Baker as co-founder and executive chairman. The company has raised just under $1 million and plans to pursue parent-focused revenue streams such as subscription services and partnerships offering safer devices, child-friendly mobile subscriptions, and safer search engines.
