Overview
Kumbaya is a marketplace app that connects parents with teens for virtual babysitting, tutoring, arts-and-crafts and other remote gigs. Launched a few weeks ago after pivoting from planned in-person gigs due to COVID-19, the founders redesigned the app to support virtual helpers using video calls. The app limits teen participants to ages 13–18 in accordance with COPPA, requires parents to approve gigs, uses SMS notifications and Daily.co for video, and processes payments via third-party systems such as Venmo. Kumbaya added about 80 teens in under two weeks who have completed more than 100 paid virtual gigs. The company has four full-time employees and five contractors; it has raised $500,000 in funding so far and is not charging service fees for the next couple of months (it had planned a 10% fee). Over time the app plans to reincorporate physical, in-person gigs once restrictions lift while maintaining virtual offerings.
