La Belle Assiette operates an online marketplace for in-home chef services, letting customers browse chef profiles and book chefs who arrive with ingredients and tools to cook at homes or offices. The platform handles chef profiles, booking management, payments and receipts, reducing administrative work for chefs. There are about 700 chefs on the platform across six European countries (France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the U.K. and Germany). The company raised $1.5M (€1.3M) in the latest round to expand its services. It previously raised the same amount in October 2014 to support geographic expansion. La Belle Assiette plans to broaden its offering into events catering, including buffets and canapé receptions, and to offer office lunches and cooking classes. La Belle Assiette lets users browse and book independent chefs who arrive with ingredients and tools to cook at private homes or offices. The service averages bookings for six people at about $55 (45€) per head and the platform takes a 12% commission. The startup provides chefs with tools to operate independently, including calendar management, billing, and an online presence. The service is available in France, the U.K., Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg. As of April the company had 272 chefs and now reports having more than 350 chefs. The company says it will use new funding to hire more chefs, enter more countries and grow its customer base to scale faster against competitors such as Kitchensurfing and Kitchit.
