Overview

Lantos Technologies developed a 3-D Ear Canal Scanning System that captures a digital model of the ear canal to replace time-consuming physical molds. The device uses a membrane that fills with fluid to conform to the ear canal and a video otoscope at the tip to capture images and generate a 3-D scan in just under a minute. The company designed a video otoscope small enough to fit inside the ear to enable the scanner. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted 510(k) clearance for the system in March. The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company has raised $1.45 million in a mix of debt, options and warrants, according to a Form D filed with the SEC. The scanner is positioned to help audiologists, earbud developers and the security industry gain more usable space in the ear canal and to enable more innovative in-ear designs. Lantos develops a minimally invasive 3D ear‑scanning system that uses a ballooned probe, a liquid interface, and a camera/light to record thousands of data points and generate a 3D image of the ear canal. The technology originated in the MIT lab of Doug Hart, whose oral scanning work was later acquired by 3M. Jeffrey C. Leathe was recently named CEO and chairman to lead commercialization across audiology, military, and consumer markets. The company is entering clinical trials, with a major trial planned with the U.S. Army, and will also run studies in audiology practices and hearing‑aid institutions. Lantos plans to move the device out of prototype and into production next year and to launch at the AAA audiology conference in mid‑2012. Headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., and founded in 2010, Lantos has nine employees and has raised $5.7 million in venture funding to date; investors include Excel Venture Management, Catalyst Health Ventures, and Mass Medical Angels. Lantos Technologies develops a 3D imaging technology that provides accurate, minimally invasive digital mapping of the human ear canal. Its technology enables development of custom-fit audio devices such as hearing aids, earphones, and noise-canceling devices. The company intends to complete product development and enable the market for extended-wear hearing devices with a more natural fit. Lantos closed a $1.6M Series A financing to advance those efforts. The company previously received initial seed capital via an innovation grant from MIT’s Deshpande Center that supported primary research. Lantos is based in Cambridge, MA.
