Laredo Labs

San Jose, CA, United States

Overview

Laredo Labs is developing an AI-driven platform that generates and edits code from high-level natural-language commands, using models trained on data from about one hundred million software projects. Its platform can complete repository-level tasks and document progress, and it is currently available in private preview. The company was co-founded in 2022 by Mark Gabel and Daniel Lord; Gabel previously served as chief scientist at Viv Labs (acquired by Samsung) and Lord was a platform engineer at Siri prior to Apple’s acquisition. Laredo says it built its own models, user experience and what it calls one of the most comprehensive software engineering datasets to train those models. The startup is pre-revenue and has raised $8.5 million in a seed round, and plans to use part of the capital to hire—expanding its team from eight to ten by the end of the year. Laredo faces legal and competitive challenges, including questions about whether its training data includes copyrighted code and broader IP risk in generative coding, and competes with entrants such as Sweep.
