Overview

Layar is a Dutch augmented-reality startup that operates an open mobile AR platform and the Layar Reality Browser. The platform hosts third-party augmented reality content known as "Layar layers." The Reality Browser app is available for iPhone, Android and Bada handsets. Layar says the new funding will be used primarily to enhance its open mobile AR platform and to promote it to third-party developers and brands to increase available AR content. Financially, the company raised roughly $14 million in its second round, bringing total capital raised to $17.4 million. Investors in the round include Intel Capital and previous backers Sunstone Capital and Prime Ventures. Layar develops the Reality Browser, an augmented-reality app for the iPhone. After launching on the App Store in October 2009 the Dutch developer withdrew the app a month later following repeated crash reports and returned after a three-month hiatus. The company says the app now uses an entirely re-engineered engine that makes it more stable, lightweight and faster. Language support has been broadened to French, German, Dutch and Italian, with the company promising more languages soon. Layar reports there are now over 400 'layars' users can view through the camera browser. The startup recently secured $3.4 million in financing and signed a global distribution agreement with an unnamed handset manufacturer.
