Overview

Layer is a hardware-plus-software startup creating a wall-mounted screen engineered specifically for digital art. The $22,000 canvas contains the computing power (including a GPU) needed to run live, code-based artworks at full resolution without compression, enabling each pixel to be governed directly by the artist’s software. Hundreds of digital artists, such as generative art pioneer Casey Reas, are already partnering with the company, and Layer bundles a subscription that automatically sequences their works on the display. Artists receive royalties based on the amount of time their pieces are shown, reflecting the firm’s stated 'artists-first' philosophy. Founder Angelo Sotira, who previously created DeviantArt, designed the product to be plug-and-play and self-sustaining so collectors can leave it running for years without manual updates. Although positioned as a niche, luxury item rather than a mass-market TV replacement, Layer has attracted early venture backing to fund its ambitions beyond hardware into a broader digital art ecosystem. To date the company has secured $5.7 million in capital but has not yet disclosed revenue or user figures.
