Overview

Practically Green provides online tools that encourage employees to act more sustainably and helps companies manage sustainability programs. The company launched with a consumer-focused product but has shifted to powering similar programs for corporate customers including NBC Universal, eBay, MGM Resorts, and Unilever. Customers identify the sustainability areas most important to them (environmental, family, fitness) and choose or create actions to promote, which are then encouraged and tracked via mobile apps, intranet, and email. Product features include recommended products, "Why This Matters" and "Your Impact" explanations to motivate participants, and visibility into who at an organization has completed given goals. The company says about 90 percent of its programs are employee-facing and that some customers see cost savings of as much as $100 per participant. Practically Green also hired Mark Bissell, an early SuccessFactors employee, as head of customer success. Practically Green offers digital and mobile employee engagement programs that combine expert sustainability content with social and game mechanics. Users can complete actions, accrue points, track their progress, and instantly gain recognition for healthy green behaviors. The company was founded in 2010 by Susan Hunt Stevens and is based in Cambridge, MA. It closed a $1M seed round in April 2012 and intends to use the new capital to pursue continued growth in its core digital and mobile employee engagement line of business. In conjunction with the investment, Jeffrey Hollender and Anton Szpitalak joined the company’s board of directors. Participating investors included CommonAngels (lead), Jeffrey Hollender, the Clean Energy Venture Group and Pan Asia Solar. Practically Green is a Boston, MA-based operator of an online service that provides people with the knowledge to make greener, healthier living decisions around the home. Its core product is a diagnostic tool that generates a user’s current “green living profile” and a proprietary engine that creates customized recommendations. Recommendations focus on reducing energy use, saving water, lowering exposure to household toxins, and preserving natural resources. The service includes social sharing features so users can share recommendations with friends and neighbors. Practically Green went into open beta in July and intends to use the seed funding to build out its technology platform. The company was founded by CEO Susan Hunt Stevens and the executive team includes Co-founder and VP of Product and Technology Jason Butler and Director of Social Programming Sarah Finnie Robinson.
