Overview
Leaf Healthcare develops a wireless patient-wearable that tracks position and movement and notifies nurses which patients need to be turned to prevent pressure ulcers. The device, cleared via FDA 510(k) in 2013, adheres to the upper chest beneath the clavicle or at the sternum with medical-grade adhesive. On the nurse side a display shows the patient by initials and room number and a color bar indicates turn status (green/yellow/red). Beyond pressure-ulcer prevention, Leaf has found additional applications including fall detection, mapping to track patient location, and alerts for high-risk patients who leave their beds. The company is pursuing commercialization of the monitor with newly raised capital and is exploring use in labor management to encourage movement and potentially reduce C-sections. In May, Desert Valley Medical Center became the first hospital to use Leaf’s devices for women in labor.
