Overview
Legacy is a digital fertility clinic for men that offers sperm testing and sperm freezing via at-home kits shipped directly to clients. The company operates two andrology labs that have analyzed more than 25,000 sperm samples, which the company says is more than any other clinic. Legacy is trusted by institutions and payers including the Cleveland Clinic, NYU Langone Health, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and Cigna. The new financing will support the company’s goal of making male fertility services more accessible and fulfilling two recently signed contracts to serve over nine million veterans. Legacy previously raised more than $40 million from a consortium that included Bain Capital Ventures, FirstMark Capital, and celebrity investors such as Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Orlando Bloom, and DJ Khaled. CEO Khaled Kteily said the fundraise takes the company to profitability, enabling it to grow and scale on its own terms. Legacy provides at-home sperm testing kits and offers sperm analysis, DNA fragmentation testing, cryopreservation with post-thaw analysis, personalized lifestyle recommendations and virtual appointments with medical professionals. The company also sells male fertility supplements developed by urology experts. Founded in 2018 out of the Harvard Innovation Labs, Legacy is Y Combinator–backed. It has partnerships that cover approximately 8M lives through leading fertility benefits providers and an additional 12M lives via insurance contracts in California, New York and New Jersey with insurers such as Aetna, Cigna and UnitedHealthcare. Legacy partners with the Military Family Building Coalition and the Tadpole Project to provide free at-home testing and one year of complimentary cryopreservation for certain active-duty Naval Special Warfare personnel. The company intends to use new funding to double headcount, expand beyond sperm testing and freezing, and launch Legacy Labs to provide same-day, at-home services for customers needing immediate sperm banking. Legacy is a digital-first fertility clinic for men incubated at the Harvard Innovation Labs and backed by Y Combinator. Its core product is a mail-in sperm test kit coupled with clinical-level analysis, telehealth consults, multi-geography cryopreservation, and sperm DNA fragmentation testing. Pricing includes a $195 DNA fragmentation add-on, a For Tomorrow package at $995, and a Forever package at $3,995; the company says its prices are less than half those of traditional fertility clinics. Legacy has partnered with major insurers so New York State residents are likely covered now and the company expects 35% of Americans to have access to sperm testing and storage through insurers by the end of 2021. The company serves couples trying to conceive, men undergoing chemotherapy or testosterone therapy, transgender individuals, and military families, and reports half of its employees are female. The team includes world-class male fertility experts and an advisory board and focuses on accessibility and scaling its services. Legacy sells at-home sperm testing kits and provides cryogenic storage and analysis services, partnering with Andrology Labs for lab work and multiple cryo-storage providers for redundant storage. The company encourages multiple deposits and charges $195 per kit, $145 per year for storage, and offers a $1,995 package for two deposits with 10 years of storage. Legacy emphasizes data privacy and security—CPPA and HIPAA compliant, anonymized/encrypted records, and unique customer IDs—and splits samples across multiple tanks and locations to reduce risk. The startup is two years old, has five employees, and is led by founder and CEO Khaled Kteily. It is pursuing business-to-business channels and has recently signed a large company client while continuing direct-to-consumer sales. The team says it may pursue research partnerships with institutions but will not sell customer data. Legacy is a Cambridge, Mass.-based male fertility startup out of Harvard Innovation Labs that enables men to test, improve and freeze their sperm without visiting a clinic. Customers receive a Legacy kit shipped to their home and then send samples back to one of Legacy’s partner clinics for clinical-level analysis. Within 24 hours clients receive a full fertility report that analyzes volume, count, concentration, motility and morphology, and they have the option to cryopreserve their deposit at partner storage facilities. Led by CEO Khaled Kteily, the company intends to use the funds to expand its suite of male fertility offerings to include additional sperm analysis, improvement and cryogenic storage capabilities. As of June 2019 Legacy raised $1.5M in funding led by Bain Capital Ventures.
