Overview
Letta commercializes MemGPT, an open-source memory layer that helps AI models remember users and prior conversations. The company plans to offer Letta Cloud, a hosted agent service and developer tools that store long-term data and expose stateful agents via REST APIs. Letta Cloud is not yet generally available; the company is accepting requests for beta users. Letta positions itself as an open alternative that can work with any model provider and emphasizes transparency compared with closed systems. The project originated from UC Berkeley’s Sky Computing Lab and grew out of the viral MemGPT open-source release. Founders Sarah Wooders and Charles Packer are Berkeley PhD students who built the MemGPT whitepaper and code that attracted rapid community adoption. Financially, Letta announced a $10 million seed round at a $70 million post-money valuation.
