Lifecake is a family-focused photo and video sharing service that organizes uploaded memories into a chronological timeline using file metadata. The platform supports uploads from devices and PCs (including drag-and-drop of large folders) and offers apps for iOS, Android, Mac, Windows and the web. It employs an algorithm to rank and highlight popular content based on engagement metrics and contextual words to surface meaningful photos. Lifecake operates a freemium model (1 GB free, 100 GB premium for $36/year) and also generates revenue from premium hardcover photo books (80 pages for $50; additional pages $0.50 each). The company launched out of beta backed by external funding and had raised a $300,000 angel round earlier in the summer. The new funding will be used to improve the ranking engine and other usability enhancements.
