LIFESCAPES is a Keio University spinout founded in May 2018 and led by CEO Junichi Ushiba that develops medical devices leveraging brain-machine interface (BMI/BCI) technology to treat severe hand and arm paralysis caused by stroke and other central nervous system diseases. The company has secured regulatory approval in Malaysia and began an initial deployment with PERKESO, the Malaysian social security organization. In December 2025 Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare designated its tentative "LIFESCAPES Therapeutic BMI" device as a "Pioneering Medical Device," enabling planned investigator-initiated clinical trials in summer 2026 to verify safety and efficacy. LIFESCAPES raised ¥600 million in its recent third-party allotment to fund ASEAN and North American expansion, domestic clinical trials, and private-pay services for chronic-phase patients. The company aims to establish sales networks in Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand within fiscal 2026 and pursue broader international commercialization. The funding and regulatory milestones position LIFESCAPES to transition from research to commercial medical device deployment.
