Overview
Ligado Networks provides next-generation connectivity that connects Industrial IoT devices across satellite and terrestrial networks. Led by CEO Doug Smith, the company aims to modernize American infrastructure and deploy Custom Private Networks for businesses. It is expanding its wireless ecosystem work to include chipset and device development and spectrum standardization. The company says it is moving into a new phase of development to enhance current services and introduce new offerings to customers. Planned services include facilitating IoT device operations across both satellite and terrestrial networks and providing spectrum partnerships to mobile operators. Recent funding will support operationalizing Ligado’s vision and the expansion of its product and ecosystem work. LightSquared is developing a wholesale-only, net-neutral 4G-LTE network that combines with satellite to provide nationwide broadband wireless access. The company has disclosed plans to commit $15 billion to build a wholesale wireless service using 40,000 base stations. LightSquared raised $265 million in new funding, sourced from both existing and new investors, although it declined to name the new backers. Current investors named in the release include Spectrum Assets and Harbinger Capital Partners, and the company has raised over $2.3 billion in the past 12 months. The company says it will use the new funding for general corporate purposes, including constructing its 4G-LTE wholesale network. LightSquared's plans have drawn regulatory scrutiny over potential GPS interference and the FCC is reviewing those concerns; the company says it plans to resolve any interference issues.
