Lightbits Labs

1830 The Alameda, San Jose, California, 95126, United States

Overview

Lightbits Labs offers a software-defined storage platform that leverages the NVMe/TCP standard to enable high-performance, low-latency NVMe-oF operations over commodity Ethernet. The company moved away from a custom acceleration card to focus on purely software-based solutions that scale NVMe queues and achieve access latencies of roughly 100–120 microseconds (around 200 microseconds on commodity servers). Its platform integrates with existing data-center infrastructure and is certified to work with VMware vSphere; Lightbits also has a partnership with Intel. Customers include cloud service providers, financial services firms, edge cloud providers, CDNs, and Fortune 1000 enterprises. During the pandemic Lightbits doubled its install base and grew its customer-acquisition pipeline by 2.3x. Financial specifics were not disclosed, but the company reported that the latest financing brings total capital raised to over $100 million. Lightbits currently employs about 100 people and plans to grow headcount to more than 150 by the end of next year. Lightbits Labs offers LightOS software and the LightField storage acceleration card to deliver NVMe/TCP-based disaggregated storage that appears as low-latency DAS to applications. Its Global Flash Translation Layer (GFTL) pools multiple NVMe SSDs to boost performance, improve endurance, and provide rich data services over standard Ethernet. The solution supports millions of IOPS at latencies comparable to direct-attached NVMe while running over commodity 10/25G networks with no server-side changes. Lightbits positions its stack as a way to eliminate stranded storage resources and lower total cost of ownership for private cloud and hyperscale-like deployments. The company helped lead the NVMe/TCP standard effort and says its products have been tested in industry-leading cloud data centers. LightOS can be purchased as software-only or bundled with the LightField accelerator.
