Overview

Lightdash is an open-source BI platform built to work with dbt that provides both a visual interface for non-SQL users and backend tooling for technical teams to define business logic. The company recently launched an “AI analyst” feature that lets teams ask natural-language questions of curated metrics and receive charts, spreadsheets, or dashboards. The AI analyst leverages Lightdash’s existing API and metadata (metric titles and descriptions) to limit exposure of raw data and supports customer-selected LLM providers or private models. Since its commercial launch and an $8.4M seed round two years ago, Lightdash introduced a hosted cloud service with additional security tooling and says more than 5,000 teams run the open-source product. The company reports that revenue has grown seven-fold in the past year and counts customers such as Workday, Beauty Pie, Hypebeast, and Morning Brew. Lightdash began as Hubble (a YC S20 graduate) and, today, has about 13 employees split between Europe and the U.S. With the new funding, the company plans to expand its team and product, including further AI-driven features. Lightdash is an open-source BI platform purpose-built to convert dbt projects into a full-stack BI product, offering both front-end visualizations for non-SQL users and back-end tooling for analysts to define metrics and workflows. The product serves as a visual layer for dbt while enabling analytics engineers to use code editors and developer workflows to manage business logic. Lightdash launched a free self-hosted Community edition and has opened a public beta of its managed Cloud product, which amassed a waitlist of about 600 companies. The company is remote-first, with founders based around London, an eight-person team across Europe, and is incorporated in both the U.S. and U.K. Financially, Lightdash said it has roughly $8.5 million in the bank (including a $2.4 million pre-seed) and is backed by a disclosed $8.4 million seed round. Planned uses for the funding include expedited hiring—especially on the product team—and expansion of an educational program called Lightdash University.
