Lightning AI commercializes PyTorch Lightning and layers enterprise-focused services and tools on top of the open-source framework. Its flagship product, AI Studios, enables customers to fine-tune and run models in preferred cloud environments and to host AI-powered apps on private cloud or on-premises data centers, with pay-as-you-go pricing and a free tier that includes 22 GPU hours per month. The platform handles distributing AI workloads across servers and provisioning infrastructure, and the company says more than 230,000 developers and 3,200 organizations use the platform. Lightning AI is New York–based, has about 50 employees, and reports a 90%+ gross margin product. The company recently raised $50 million and now has a total war chest of $103 million; it plans to use proceeds to recruit new customers, including government customers, and to expand the platform into new markets. Management expects to reach $10–20 million in annual recurring revenue by the end of next year and to achieve profitability shortly after. Lightning AI develops developer tools and a platform to simplify AI workflows, centered on the open-source PyTorch Lightning framework. Its platform includes workflow scheduling for distributed computing, infrastructure-as-code provisioning, a hosted deployment/monitoring service, and a curated app gallery of ready-to-deploy AI models and components. Lightning AI generates revenue primarily through fully managed products and the CEO said the company is tracking to be cash-flow positive within the next 36 months. The team traces its origins to work begun at NYU CILVR and Facebook AI Research; founder William Falcon open-sourced PyTorch Lightning in 2015 and co-founded Lightning AI in 2019.
