Lightyears Solar develops community-scale solar farms and operates one site in Auckland's Waiuku. The company focuses on projects in the roughly 5–15 MW range, which it says fit existing power networks and are low impact for communities. It raised $6 million to build three new farms in Canterbury and Wairarapa that will total 18 MW and could power nearly 4,000 homes. Co-founder and development manager Matt Shanks said the Ashburton and Wairarapa farms were already under construction. Once those projects are operational Lightyears would have 20 MW in its portfolio and plans to begin construction of 60 MW of projects in 2025. Financially, the business also has a $25 million loan from New Zealand Green Investment Finance.
