Overview
Likarda is a regenerative medicine company advancing a proprietary diabetes treatment for dogs and cats. Founded in 2012 by Lisa Stehno-Bittel, the Kansas City, Kansas–based lab is developing insulin-producing cell clusters called the Kanslet™, which are microencapsulated islets that can be infused into animals. The microencapsulated islets are transplanted via injection into the belly of a diabetic dog, aiming to remove the need for twice-daily insulin injections. After years of development and work with partners, Likarda is in the process of bringing islet transplants to dogs. The company raised $4M in a Series A and intends to use the funds to scale the program from treating hundreds of animals to thousands. Its clinical research program was being finalized and expected to launch by the end of 2017.
