Overview
Line is a Japanese messaging app that operates an embedded mobile payments service called Line Pay and is expanding into broader financial services. The company views payments as "glue" to boost engagement across its messaging, content and games ecosystem and has introduced a Visa credit card tie‑in and plans for a digital bank. Line has explored loans, insurance and other services tied to its Link token, and it has launched a crypto exchange and an investment fund. The service is available in Japan, Thailand, Taiwan and Indonesia; Line reports roughly 165 million monthly active users across those four countries and 40 million registered Line Pay users. In Japan alone it estimates about 50 million registered users. Financially, Line posted revenue of ¥207.18 billion in 2018 (up 24%) but recorded a ¥5.79 billion loss that year. Line Pay reported GMV of ¥55 billion per month as of November 2017; there has been no GMV update since. Line Mobile is the messaging‑app Line’s mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service in Japan that emphasizes simplicity and ease of use. The service offers unlimited data for Line services and for prominent social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Line has also launched a mobile service in Thailand through a partnership with Telenor’s DTAC operator unit. Line does not disclose customer figures for Line Mobile; documents show the mobile business was originally capitalized at around $15 million (1.7 billion JPY). The broader Line company reported a 2017 profit of 8.078 billion JPY on revenue of 167.147 billion JPY and said monthly active users across its four largest markets total 167.5 million. Line has announced plans to add crypto trading and loans/insurance services to its chat app, indicating additional product expansion at the parent‑company level.
